Taking my images. :)

After my photoshoot, we took a trip to Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model Live. Where Amy Childs from The Only Way Is Essex was promoting her fashion line. I then chose to use the pictures it took whilst there, to add to my contents page.

There was also interviews happening at the same time, one of which was with Harry also from The Only Way Is Essex. I took a picture of this aswell:

Billboard, Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Analysis :)

  • The use of popular young artists, shows the target audience to be those between 15-25.
  • Billboard magazine is aimed at those who are particularly intersted in the featured artist. This maybe the reason they use very little other information other than that concerning a particular featured artist.
  • However, The small use of artists from various different musical backgrounds such as Taylor Swift, Eminem, Sting and Sheryl Crow, draw in a wider audience.
  • The use of the colour pink Pink symbolizes love and romance, caring, tenderness, acceptance and calm. It also gives out an up-beat, lively feel which fits with the genre of music Katy Perry produces.
  • The plain background Katy Perry herself stand out. Not only this but the black writing "Katy Perry" stands out against the plain, pink background. Which helps draw in the target audiences attention.
  • The flowers surronding Katy Perry draws in a more girlie audience, which to me suggests that the target audience would be females 15-25.
  • The flowers also give the impression that Katy Perry is herself a girlie girls.

  • The colour is simple but unlike the other music magazines I have analysed it is not the same colour scheme as on the front cover. However the colour scheme of the contents page is the same in every issue.
  •  On the left hand side of the page there is a contents list devoted entirely t music and usic downloads. (Albums, Songs and This week) This layout makes the contents easier to read and follow.
  • There is then a divide down the page to seperate the regular content from the features in the specific issue.
  • On the other side of the divide are images of the featured articles, unconventionally there is no information just a page number, this would help draw in the audience as they would be eager to see what the articles are about.
  • This side of the contents page is also split into setions, up-front, features, music and in every issue. This again makes it easier for the audienceto read.

NME, Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Analysis :)

  • Conventionally with music magazines, the colour scheme is simple using Black, White, Yellow and Red.
  • The white background helps the text and the other images stand out
  • The use of both male and female artists on the front page shows the magazine is aimed at both males and females.
  • NME is aimed at teenagers, this is apparent by the use of modern music. However it won’t appeal to all teenagers. Only those interesting in the music associated with the main feature.
  • Lily Allen has been used on the front cover because she was popular at the time. Unpopular featured celebrities are not going to sell magazines.
  • The line "Lily Allen takes on the world" makes her seem like a strong female which is very appealing to the reader.
  • The main feature is bigger than the others and looks like it is cut out of a news paper. This makes it less formal and therefore more appealing to the young audience. This could also link to the fact the NME used to be a newspaper.
  • At the bottom of the page is a list of bands and artists this is used to attract more than one type of audience.
  • Above the masthead there is a black strip with yellow writing, concerning the Arctic Monkeys" This connotes a rock genre and is again used to attract more than one type of audience.

  • The simple colour scheme is continued from the front page.
  • The contents page is easy to read as it is split into sections (News, Radar, Reviews, Live and Features)
  • Again the white background helps the text and the other images stand out, it also keeps the reader from being distracted
  • On the left hand side there is a list of bands and artists featured in the magazine this makes it easier for the reader to quickly locate a feature on their favourites.
  • The Content section, headings stand out again making it easy for the reader.
  • The page numbers are in red which helps them to stand out.
  • In the centre of the contents page, there is bold writing which highlights the main feature of the magazine.
  • The image of the main article is the biggest and one of the only images on the page.

      • The plain colour scheme (black, white and red) is again consistent of the rest of the magazine.
      • The white background and the same font as used on the front cover helps the pull out quote "people think I’m an attention seeker but I’m just honest" stand out even more.
      • Underneath the pull out quote is a brief introduction. Lily Allen being in red helps entice the reader further.
      • The layout of the page is very conventional as the image on the right hand page over laps to the left and the pull out quote on the left overlaps to the right.
      • The only image on the page is of Lily Allen herself, it takes up most of the left hand side which shows her importance in the magazine.
      • The pose is very informal promoting a casual image and showing it to be a casual interview.
      • Her wrists are turned outwards to show her tattoo.
      • The red checkered shirt is not only used to keep the colour scheme consistent but to make her image stand out against the dull black and white writing.
      • The text is separated into four side-by-side columns in order to make it clear and easy to read.
      • The pull out quote taken directly from the interview is used at a title. This is effective in informing the reader what the interview is about and allowing them to quick make up their minds as to whether it interests them.
      • The text is affective as it is simple which allows the audience to stay with it, rather than get distracted by anything else.

Q magazine, Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Analysis :)

        •  bold, eye catching fonts are used throughout the front cover.
        • The biggest font is the ‘Lana Del Rey’ because it’s the main article advertised and it accompanies the main picture, it also uses pink font which helps it stand out.
        •  The font used on the ‘Lana Del Rey’ has been used to match the personality of the artist, looking like it is written in lipstick.
        • the layout is ordered with text positioned, in coloums around the main picture and magazine title, this is conventional for any music magazine.
        • The picture is placed in the middle of the page as it’s the main feature and the masthead is placed in the top left corner of the cover. Also ver conventional.
        • false blood is used as a prop on her face, this helps portray her character/personality and suggests that she is damaged. Also it relates to her single "Born to Die".
        • The language used is formal as the magazine is typically aimed at over 25's. The front cover doesn't speak directly to the audience as it is trying to appeal to a large group of people, rather than those interested in a particular genre.
        •  the colours used are: Red, white, pink, yellow and black. Colours are coupled together to minimise the business of it. For example Yellow and Black, and Pink and White, This is another deviced used to target various groups of people.
        • A mid-shot of Lana Del Rey is used as the main picture on the cover. A mid-shot is used to so she is easily recognised and so is a big selling point for the magazine. The shot is slightly low angle to make her look powerful.

        • the layout of the Q contents page is unconventional as they have spread the contents over two pages
        • At the top of the first side it has the headline/title ‘contents’ which is the boldest text on the page and also very conventional.
        • the main picture on each page is located on the  top right of the front and top left of the back page, these two images are the biggest showing them to be the most important or of most interest to the audience and has two smaller pictures located directly below it.
        • On the first page all text is is one coloum on the left hand side which is the convention for a music magazine, however the other page mirrors this with the text all in one coloum on the right.
        • There is a consistent colour scheme used throughout both sides of the contents page, this is white, red and black.
        • it is conventional for magazines not to use more than 3 or 4 colours on a page so it doesn't look overloaded with colour.
        • All page numbers are in red as they are easily recognised and do not blend in with the text.
        • Certain parts of the text have been put in red font in order for them to stand out more for example the ‘regulars and ‘features’ headings are in red which  clearly separates them from the article titles below.
        • the language used is quite informal as there is swearing used and slang such as "bloke" and "pigeon crap" this is because it is aimed at an adult audience and so wouldn't usually be read by children. The magazine does not use any words that directly addresses the audience and so is mainly in third person .
        • the contents headline/title is the largest font on the page which is conventional as it tells you what page it is
        • The article names are in bold so they are more obvious than the stand firsts below and are more eye catching.
        • The Q logo is also at the top of the page which is conventional as most magazines will put there logo/title on every page.
        • All the picture used on the contents page will have the page number written on the picture and will also be related to one of the stories advertised in the text side of the page.

        • use a conventional layout with the picture taking up one page and putting all the text on the other page.
        •  The text has been laid out in three columns which is conventional of magazines.
        • However,  small pictures in the middle column is very unconventional.
        •  the font used on the pull quote is bold and in block capitals, this is to make it stand out
        •  Two drop capitals are also used in the article, one of which is at the start and the other indicates the start of another topic. Drop capitals are commonly used at the start of articles in magazines
        • the costumes/attire worn by the Coldplay band is all bright colours which has been used to match the bright background
        • . There are no additional props used in the photo shoot and the shots are kept basic. As there is enough going on with the pattern and the colours.
        •  the shot used is a long shot as it fits all four band members in and you can see the background behind them on all sides
        • The shot is neither high angled or low angled and so represents them to be more approachable as they are not seen to have any more or less status
        • - the magazine uses formal language throughout the text and does not directly talk to the audience.

        Wednesday 7 December 2011

Rolling Stone magazine, Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Analysis :)

Other than black and white only three different colours are used.
blue - in the background and her outfit. steadfastness, dependabilty, serenity, calmness and wisdom are only some things the colour blue signifies. Various shades of blue create a positive message.
yellow. in the dividers and to an extent, her hair. creates feeling of happiness or optimism.
Red. In the logo and her lipstick. associated with energy, life and love. red is often used to symbolize deep passion and intense energy in things. In a more negative aspect it can be used to anger or rage. Rolling Stone magazine deliberately uses grapghics fromdifferent time periods, making it stand out.
Having the subject (Christina Aguilerra) in the centre is very conventional of most magazines. However, her pose and framing of the picture is not. Conventionally images for music magazines are taken in mid-shot.
Having text in coloums down both sides of the page is also very conventional.

Although the contents page is set in coloums (making it simple and easy to follow), which is conventional to most music magazines, this page is dominated with an image. Drawing the reader to article.
The main image is taken from the point of view of an audience, making the subjects appear more natural and life like.
Second, smaller image showing it to be the second most important article.
As with the font cover, the colours are kept minimal. The use of black and white together, signifies boldness and confidence, with the deep purple colour signifying class in regards to the main image.
Unconventionally there is no title, indicating that it is the contents page but the list of features along with the page numbers communicates this to the reader effectively enough.
The Font used for the "968" is the same font as used in the logo on the front cover, how ever the colours of these rarely match.

Picture Covers both pages which is very unconventional for a music magazine. Magazines usually have the main image dominating one page and the text, the other.
The unconventional layout leaves little room for text, however the feature continues over the page.
On the other hand, the little text present is ordered in coloums.
Also, Unconventionally the drop can is not the same font as the rest of the text. The "USA" watermark is also part of the heading.
As with the rest of the magazine, there is very little colour used. The majority of the page is in black or grey and white, which make the red of her hair and the flag stand out.One of the reasons for using red maybe power which is fitting in the article as it talks about her being such a success story in America.  a USA flag is used in the picture as its directly associated with the article as the article talks about Florence and the machine in America.
Formal language and written in 3rd person.

        Photoshoot. :)

Analysis of Photoshoot: My photographs cam out better than I expected. Some did have bad lighting, like the fifth image for example, however this would be easily rectifiable in photoshop. The Shadows in images 1 and 3 may also prove to be a problem as it is unconventional and would need to be changed. The over all experience of taking my photoshoot was very enjoyable, as I had the opportunity to work with technology that I had never worked with before like the camera and tripod.

        Setting up my photoshoot. :)

For my photoshoot I wanted a very professional look. So I decided to approach a professional and ask for some advice. Kindly they agreed to share their expertise on various different poses, camera angles / positions and lighting. Which I was to later try out on my model. On arriving to the location of my photoshoot, we immediately found a wall with a plain background which was perfect as it allows a lot to be done with it after the images are taken. The camera started the shoot on a tripod in front of my model but then took up various different positions such as close up, low and high angles. The lighting started behind me and the camera shining directly on my model, however this produced a shadow so this was also moved.

        Moodboard. :)

For my magazine I wanted a very vintage look, so I started by researching various vintage hair styles, clothes, colours and themes. This gave me a much easier understanding of how I would like my photoshoot to look and my overall magazine.

        Survey Results :)

It took a while but i finally received enough response from my survey to build my magazine... The evidence I received allowed me to construct my magazine accordingly aiming it a females aged 16-19, it also showed me that these 16-19 year old females would be willing to pay between £3-£5 for the magazine.

        Preliminary task: Contents Page. :)

For my preliminary task I was asked to make a front cover and contents page for a student magazine. My Student magazine, Studenews was created using photoshop. The layout of the contents page is somewhat on conventional as it isn't all spread out in coloumns running down.. The comments on my contents page were overall positive but it was said that it was too simple and the colours were too "girlie" to appeal to everyone.

        Preliminary task: Front Cover. :)

For my preliminary task I was asked to make a front cover and contents page for a student magazine. My Student magazine, Studenews was created using photoshop. The postion of the image is somewhat on conventional as it is to the left instead of in the center. The comments on my preliminary task were overall positive but it was said that the colours were too "girlie" to appeal to everyone.

        Working Progress. :)

This was an introductory task, to conduct an interview and to design the page of the magazine of which it would feature. Although mine is artistic, it is not as good as it could have been:

        My Models? :)

A few days ago I contacted my prospective models and got three responses. Two more need atleast. I will take individual pictures of the all against white backgrounds and choose the best for my front page. I will then take a few group photographs for my conents page and also for my double page, interview spread. I will keep the blog up to date on the images and also from nehind the scenes. :)

        Survey :)

Our next task was to first decide whether we were going to design a music magazine, an opening sequence to a film, or a radio, news broadcast. I personally chose the music magazine in which we are to create a front page, contents page and a double paged spread of a new music magazine. Our task was then to create a survey including questions on how the target audience would like the music magazine to look:

        Please take my survey here:

        Photo Timie :)

On our second lesson we were asked to take pictures of each other in order to put them on an interview here are the pictures I took of Joshua:

And here is my favourite picture that Joshua took for my interview:
